Susanna Room - Fribourg Cantonal Hotel

The Fribourg Cantonal Hotel, inaugurated in 1522, is one of the oldest and best-preserved town halls in Switzerland. After numerous alterations throughout its history, the building underwent a major restoration project that lasted from 2020 to 2022.

The mural of the former Small Council chamber (Susanna room), of remarkable artistic quality, occupies the entire upper part of the west wall. Painted by Anton Henckel and his assistant between 1530 and 1531 (the date «1531» is visible), it illustrates the biblical story of Susanna and the Elders. Discovered behind the wood paneling installed in 1775, the mural was in a remarkable state of preservation. The painting, dominated by green (copper-based), features striking blue backgrounds (azurite) and fine modeling achieved through hatching (lead white and lead yellow). Elements highlighted with gold leaf indicate the desire to give a prestigious touch to this ensemble.

The iron door of the room known as the War Treasury has also regained its luster following cleaning and stripping operations.
