Julian James

director, professionally qualified conservator-restorer CIA, SCR, ICON

Julian has been working in the conservation and restoration of wall paintings, architectural surfaces, and polychrome sculptures for 35 years now. Holding a Bachelor of Arts degree, he obtained his diploma in the conservation and restoration of wall paintings at the Courtauld Institute in London before settling in Switzerland, in the Canton of Fribourg. Managing partner of a conservation-restoration workshop in Fribourg for 8 years, he opened his own practice in 2000. From 2005 to 2015, he worked as a part-time lecturer at SUPSI (Scuola universitaria professionale della Svizzera italiana). In recent years, often in association with other workshops, he has led numerous large-scale conservation-restoration projects. A federal expert, he also sits on the Cultural Property Commission of the Canton of Fribourg and is an accredited member of the Swiss Association for Conservation and Restoration (SCR) and the United Kingdom Institute of Conservation (ICON), among other affiliations. As a professional partner for the Swiss National Science Foundation research project Cultural Heritage Needs Continuous Care, he is currently involved in the design and implementation of maintenance programs for painted decor and polychrome sculptures in the French-speaking cantons. The workshop regularly collaborates in a consortium with Olivier Guyot (the Guyot-James consortium), particularly for major projects such as the Fribourg Cathedral, the Payerne Abbey, or the Basilica of Valère in Sion in recent years. Since 2022, the Julian James workshop and the Olivier Guyot workshop, while maintaining their independent activities in the Canton of Fribourg, have joined forces under the name Atelier Saint-Dismas-Guyot-James for projects in the cantons of Valais, Vaud, and Geneva.
